Chapter 3915
Isabella smiled and said, “If the person taking over the family business doesn’t have true ability, they won’t be able to bear the responsibility. In this way, they can still prove themselves. Of course, starting a business from scratch and inheriting from a generation or two back is different.
“For those who are supported by their family, no matter how many achievements they have, others will say they relied on their family’s support. If they fail, people will call them useless and a waste, and that family wealth will never last more than three generations. They’ll just wait for your family to go bankrupt.
“So, without real ability, no one can take over the family business.”
Austin was silent for a moment before responding, “What you say is true. My eldest brother, for example, is very capable. Although we could all take on the responsibility, none of us is as steady as he is. He’s the real anchor of our family. With him around, we don’t have to worry even if the sky falls.
“Because he is there, the rest of us have more time to do what we want.”
Isabella thought about her own situation.
She was the eldest daughter, and with her taking on the family’s burden, her younger siblings would not have to worry about it in the future; they could do whatever they wanted without being confined to the family business, unlike her.
“You are lucky,” Isabella said sincerely. She also wished there was someone who could support her so that she would not have to bear such a heavy burden and could do what she wanted without worry.
Austin smiled. “What about you?”
He tilted his head to look at her. Isabella met his gaze but quickly looked away. Austin, however, continued to look at her.
He genuinely liked watching her. She appeared cold, which was to establish authority and control the many employees and stakeholders in the company, but her true nature was probably not that cold.
However, she was indeed very beautiful. His nana never made a poor pick. Not only was she from a good family and capable, but she was also stunning.
Grandma May often said a good daughter-in-law would net her good grandchildren, not just in terms of upbringing but also in looks.
People often said that the York men were all handsome, and that was because Grandma May had chosen such beautiful women for her sons. Their parents were all good-looking, so even if the children turned out less attractive, they still would not turn out too bad.
“As for me,” Isabella continued, “You can’t really say I’m lucky because the burden is too heavy. Sometimes, I feel like I can't breathe under the pressure. I wasn't born a strong person; life pushed me to take over the company. Taking over the company back then was something I had to do.
“But you can’t say I’m unlucky either, because my family is very harmonious. You’ve seen it—we get along well, my uncles and aunts treat me like their own daughter, and my cousins respect me as the eldest sister.
“Even Louis and Phillip, who are spoiled by everyone, behave well before me and never challenge my authority.
“When I go back home, I can fully relax and enjoy the warmth of my family. I guess that’s happiness.”
Austin said, “You’re the eldest, and since your brother’s still young, you have to bear the heavy burden. But when Mr. Louis grows up, you can step back and have a good rest.”
“I’ll travel the world with you when the time comes, so you won’t have to travel on an empty stomach,” Austin added, so Isabella would not have any doubts.
“Louis will only be seven after Christmas, so he’s still eleven years away from adulthood. Even after he turns eighteen, he’ll need to finish university and learn for several more years. By the time he’s truly ready to take over, it’ll be at least twenty years from now.”
Isabella did not dare to think about stepping down just yet.
