Chapter 29: Great-Grandfather
Meanwhile, over at Lucy's side, the family gathering was in full swing, and everyone was boasting at the dinner table.
After several rounds of drinks, the conversation shifted to meaningless chatter. Johnson turned to Lucy and said, "Now that the man is back, you shouldn't waste any more time on him. It's important to return the child to him!"
It wasn't just Johnson who felt this way. Thor nodded in agreement. "I think he's right. The reason I called you back was to give you a chance. If you're willing to give up your daughter, then I'll still consider letting you return to our family. If not, then don't ever think about coming back!"
"Of course, if you agree to come back, I'll reward you." Thor handed Lucy a bank card. "Here's five million dollars. It's enough for you to live comfortably for the rest of your life."
Lucy stood up suddenly. "What if I like my current life?"
Thor's face twisted into a mocking smile. "If you like your current life, then let's take your daughter away. You said you like your current life, right? So whether Tangna is in your life or not shouldn't matter to you."
With that, Thor stood up and started walking towards the door. "Where are you going?" Lucy asked. He laughed. "What, don't you want to see your daughter?"
Lucy looked stricken. "She's my daughter. Taking her away like this, is it really right?"
"Besides, my life includes having Tangna. I said I like my current life because I like having her in it."
Thor stopped and frowned at Lucy's words. "I'm doing this for your own good. Granddaughter, let me warn you, if you keep being stubborn, I will make your life a living hell."
Lucy looked at him, tears welling in her eyes. Thor continued, "If you give up that bastard and that man, not only will you be welcomed back, but you'll also get this five million dollars and everything else I can provide, including a new man!"
Wait, what was Grandpa saying? Lucy's eyes widened in shock. "Grandpa, what do you mean?"
"Do you remember Takal? His wife just died. Our family needs to establish connections with him. If you want to come back to our family, you have to make some sacrifices!"
Lucy was stunned. "Grandpa, you want me to marry a man I don't love? Takal is almost fifty years old! He's known for playing with women until they die! Marrying him would be like a death sentence for me!"
Thor scoffed. "So what? Do you think you can get anything without sacrificing something? That's impossible!"
Seeing that Lucy still wasn't willing to comply, Thor's face darkened. "I have other matters to attend to. You can leave now." With that, Thor left the room.
Lucy's hands clenched into fists, her expression changing. She saw a wine bottle on the table and picked up a glass.
"Ah!" She suddenly poured all the wine in front of her onto the floor.
"Lucy, what are you doing?" The people present all stood up, questioning her. They looked at Lucy, who raised her head and faced them defiantly.
"I know what my status is. You all look down on me and my daughter, and I don't care! But I won't let anyone take my daughter away from me! I won't do anything that goes against my conscience! I won't give in without a fight!"
Hearing her words, everyone was stunned. Johnson frowned. "What did you say?"
Lucy ignored them. Her biological father, Simpson, watched her from the side, sighing deeply. "Lucy, I've failed you all these years. But there's nothing I can do to help you. I know I'm useless, but in this family, I have no say. If you can get close to Takal, maybe our whole family would be proud of you."
Selling her body to be with an old man—is that what it means to bring pride to the family? Lucy stared coldly at him, not saying a word. Suddenly, a thought crossed her mind.
"If I go to Great-Grandfather Sutake, maybe I can end all of this?"
Great-Grandfather Sutake was the eldest in the family. His presence could make a difference in Lucy's life. However, his health was very poor, and he could barely speak or get out of bed.
Thinking this, Lucy turned to leave, intending to speak with Sutake. Just then, a familiar voice called out. Sophie stood in front of Lucy.
"Stop right there! Who gave you permission to go in? Are you still blaming us for that old man? Are you taking your problems to make Great-Grandfather sad?"
Sophie, Fox's daughter, had a significant standing in the family, always acting high and mighty. "I'm telling you, Great-Grandfather doesn't want to see you! You're not a good person! If you go in there, it's an insult to him!"
Lucy laughed coldly. "What, according to you, I'm not part of this family anymore? Why can you see Great-Grandfather but I can't? And if I do, so what? Will you stop me?"
Sophie was furious. "Don't push your luck! I'm telling you, the whole family despises you. You better leave now!"
