Chapter 121: The Threat
An envelope?
Joseph turned his gaze to the desk, where a blood-stained letter lay. No wonder Maiden had looked at it; anyone would want to know what was inside such a disturbing object.
Joseph opened the letter and found a threatening message with no identifiable handwriting. It was from the Kerry family in New York.
"The Kerry family is not as simple as you think," Maiden whispered.
"Their influence in New York is far greater than you can imagine. Moreover, they already know about your warning to Kerry Simon."
Joseph's face darkened.
"How do they know?"
Maiden shook her head.
"I’m not sure, but I've heard they've sent assassins to kill you."
A glint of cold determination flashed in Joseph's eyes.
"It seems they have a death wish!"
"Be careful, Mr. Joseph," Maiden said with concern. "I worry about your safety."
Joseph patted her shoulder.
"Don't worry, I'll be fine. But thank you for the warning."
Maiden smiled slightly.
"We’re friends; it’s the least I can do."
Joseph nodded, already strategizing his next moves. He couldn't allow the Kerry family's schemes to succeed, nor could he let harm come to himself or those around him.
However, he was also curious.
"How does a woman from Florida know so much about a New York family?"
Maiden furrowed her brow and explained.
"My father used to be involved in New York’s underworld. So even though we seem insignificant, we still have connections there."
"And today, I came to you because of my father."
"Mr. Joseph, my father developed many health problems during his time in New York. At first, we didn't pay much attention, but now it's become severe and dangerous."
"My father has been diagnosed with uremia, and the treatment costs are astronomical."
"Could you please help us? Just a loan of fifty thousand would be enough. I beg you."
She was about to kneel before Joseph, who quickly helped her up. He understood her predicament; fifty thousand was a significant amount for most people.
"I’ll see what I can do."
Joseph decided to look into the treatment for uremia and its costs, as well as gather more information about Maiden's father's past in New York. He suspected there might be more to this story.
Maiden's eyes welled up with gratitude.
"Really?"
Seeing her about to cry, Joseph nodded slightly.
"Don't worry, I'll do my best to help. But I need to know more about your father's past in New York. It might help us find a better solution."
Maiden nodded gratefully. She hadn't expected Joseph to agree so readily.
Over the next few days, Joseph juggled dealing with the Kerry family’s threat and researching uremia treatments. He found a new experimental drug that could potentially help Maiden's father, though it was expensive and risky.
Joseph called Maiden to his office.
"You know I’ve been working on finding a solution for your father, right?"
Maiden nodded.
"I know, and I'm so grateful for your help."
Joseph nodded.
"I’ve found some information that could help your father, but I need you to promise me something."
Maiden's face flushed as she nodded, expecting him to ask for something personal.
"I understand."
She had asked for help from others before, and they had all demanded something in return, often asking her to repay with her body. But she found the idea of repaying Joseph more bearable than others.
Maiden began to undress, but Joseph, surprised, quickly stopped her.
"That’s not what I meant. I want you to promise me, no matter the outcome, to stay strong."
Maiden's face turned even redder, and she lowered her head.
"I will..."
Joseph handed her a card.
"Here’s fifty thousand. It should cover your father’s treatment. But this isn’t a gift. After your father recovers, you need to work for my company to repay the loan."
Maiden looked up in surprise.
"Thank you! I will work hard to repay you!"
She had been waiting for Joseph to make a further demand, but he only said something that left her unsure of how to react.
"I want you to take this chance to rest and take care of yourself."
Maiden was dumbfounded.
Joseph was truly different.
She knelt before Joseph again.
"Thank you, Mr. Joseph!"
Joseph nodded slightly as Maiden left with the money.
Afterward, Joseph contacted a specialist in experimental drug treatments, who was connected to Dr. Mundo. Hearing Joseph's voice, they all agreed to help.
Joseph then focused on preparing to face the Kerry family's threat. He knew the battle would be dangerous, but he was determined to protect himself and his loved ones.
Realizing that his loyal brothers were not around, Joseph knew his chances were slim. He had to find a solution while controlling the situation to ensure a way out.
Joseph also secretly investigated the Kerry family’s influence in New York, searching for their weaknesses.
During his investigation, he uncovered some shocking secrets that would be crucial in his fight against the Kerry family.
He recorded all these secrets in a notebook, which he kept with him at all times.
