Seeking revenge
It turned out that the poison the hybrid had used on Thomas was not fatal but had only been used to incapacitate him for a moment.
By the time the powder cleared from the air, Jonathan and the hybrids were gone, taking Nessa with them.
At that moment, Eleanor received a mindlink message from Miller letting her know that the hybrids had tried to escape but he had captured them.
Eleanor and Thomas rushed back to the ambush point while the grey wolves gave chase to Jonathan and the two warriors.
When they got to where Miller was waiting with his captives, the first thing Eleanor noticed was that Sophia was not with him.
“Where is Sophia?” she asked, looking around. All of the warriors who had been in her group were back. However, none of them seemed to know where she had disappeared to.
Quickly, Eleanor went to check the spot Sophia had been responsible for. There were many dead rogues and hybrids but no sign of her. According to the warriors who had been under her command, she had not bothered taking any prisoners.
Eleanor knew then that she must have left to go seek Mia on her own. She had to act quickly. She hoped that Jonathan retreating meant that none of his hybrids or rogues were still around because if Sophia ran into them on her own, she would not be able to fight them off.
“Did any of you see Mia?” she asked the warriors who had been with Sophia. None of them reported seeing her. Neither had Miller.
It made Eleanor even more worried. It would be better if Sophia had caught sight of Mia. Because if she hadn’t, it would mean she had decided to go into enemy territory to look for her.
Eleanor wanted to believe that Sophia would not make such a careless move, but her thirst for revenge was too strong and she was not in the state of mind to weigh the pros and cons.
Even though she had convinced Sophia to stick to the plan, a part of her had known that she would find a way to go after Mia either way.
“Keep an eye on them,” she told Miller, referring to the captives. “I’ll go look for her.”
“Alone?” Miller questioned, hesitant to let her go on her own. “Let me go with you.”
“No, you need to stay here,” she told him firmly. “Henry and Ethan are still fighting Jonathan’s men. Organise for some of your and Sophia’s warriors to go and help them. If I need help, I’ll let you know.”
Miller agreed, even though he would have preferred to accompany her. He knew she was capable of protecting herself, but this was a dangerous area and it would be prudent for anyone to have someone to watch their back.
He watched as she rushed into the forest before he led the warriors back to the captives.
Meanwhile, Henry was still fighting the hybrids and rogues he and his warriors had ambushed. He tried to reach Eleanor through their link to ask whether she had come back, but there was no response on her side.
His last communication with her had been when she alerted him to begin the attack. She had said she had everything under control, but he had not heard from her since then.
He decided to reach out to Ethan instead. “Have you heard from the others? Is Eleanor back?”
“Yeah,” Ethan replied. “She came back but went into the forest to look for Sophia.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
Henry cursed as his wolf collided with a rogue and they struggled on the ground. Why on earth would she venture into the forest alone when the place was crawling with Jonathan’s men?
He tried to reach her again to no avail. As his worry for her increased, he fought the remaining rogues with renewed fervour. He needed to get rid of them and go after her before she ran into trouble.
“What direction did she go?” he asked Ethan once he tore open the rogue’s guts and left him bleeding to death. There were only two other remaining rogues and his warriors had them covered.
“Towards the border,” his Beta replied.
Wasting no time, he ran into the forest. After a few minutes, he caught Eleanor’s scent. He followed the scent deeper into the forest but did not find any other signs of her.
When he had been following it for about a quarter of an hour, it suddenly disappeared. That was when he realised that the hybrids had replicated her scent to mislead him. And that could only mean one thing–they knew he would come looking for her and they wanted to get to her first.
He had spent almost twenty minutes looking for her in the wrong place. What were the chances he could still find her before it was too late?
In another part of the forest, Eleanor was following Sophia’s scent. As it got stronger, she heard the sounds of fighting behind thick bushes in front of her. She rushed towards them, getting ready to spring into action.
When she broke through the bushes, she saw Sophia deep in a fight with Mia. Sophia was not in her wolf form for some reason, but Eleanor was not going to give Mia that advantage.
They did not have time to dally. The sooner they got out of there and restrategised on how to find Jonathan’s location, the better. It would be much easier now that they had Mia.
She was just about to shift when someone grabbed her from behind. Before she could hit back and escape, something covered her nose.
A strange odour filled her senses and she felt herself losing grip of her consciousness as she sagged into the attacker behind her.
