Mysterious Threat

Everyone was busy debating the credibility of Thomas’s claims that they did not even notice that the two Alphas were getting close to blows as they faced off. Eleanor, though, was watching them closely and stepped between them before their verbal fight could turn into a physical one. “I cannot believe you are supporting this man,” Thomas told her. “When his plot is uncovered, aren’t you afraid you’ll be persecuted alongside him?” Standing by Henry, Eleanor faced him with a hard glare. “If you have any concrete evidence to show that Henry is involved in all of this, present it to all of us here. But if you don’t, I suggest you shut up. This is a serious attack that should be investigated thoroughly. If everybody here decides to point fingers blindly, it will only benefit the culprit!” “Luna Eleanor is right,” the Chief Councilman, who had recovered from the poison’s effect, said as he walked over. “We will investigate this matter thoroughly and will not stop until we unearth who caused it. If anyone has any idea who is behind this, they should come forward with evidence as soon as possible. This is a threat to the entire community and should be dealt with urgently.” “Thank you for the wise words, Chief,” Henry said. “I think the best thing to do right now is for all of us to go back to our packs and get ready for any possible attacks in the future. It’s possible that this was only the beginning and the assailant might target individual packs soon.” “I agree with Alpha Henry,” another Alpha said. “We are all gathered here as Alphas and Lunas, and some of us even came with our Betas. At the moment, our packs are vulnerable to attacks. The enemy might take this an opportunity to carry out more attacks in our absence.” His words elicited reactions all around, with many agreeing with his sentiments. As the focus shifted from Henry, Thomas gritted his teeth. He would not be able to pin anything on him as long as he did not have any evidence. But this was not the end. He would do whatever he could to make the council overturn their approval of Eleanor’s divorce request. If he could prove that this was all Henry’s plan to infiltrate Blackstorm, he would have a shot. Alphas and Lunas started leaving the hall in a hurry to get back to their packs. Fortunately, there had not been any reports of any attacks within the packs. But there was no time to waste, because nobody knew when or where the assailant would strike next. As everyone dispersed, Eleanor excused herself and told Henry she would join him and the others outside the hotel. Leaving the hall, she caught up to Miller, who had been working with the warriors to move the critically injured to the ambulances outside. “Can I speak with you for a moment?” she asked him, looking back towards the hall to make sure Thomas had not followed her. She was relieved that Thomas had failed to accuse Henry, but she knew that was not the end of it. He would look for other means to attack either of them in his quest for revenge. Right now, it was crucial to establish Miller’s position. “Of course,” he told her. She led him down the hallway and around a corner until they were out of sight of the departing guests. “The council has granted my divorce from Thomas,” she told him when they came to a stop near a window. After everything that had happened, there was a possibility that Miller did not know about the divorce yet. Unless Thomas had mind-linked him, but it was not the kind of news he would be in a hurry to share. “I’m no longer his Luna, and I won’t be coming back to Blackstorm with you.” “I’m happy that it worked out for you,” he told her. He had sincerely hoped it would, because if her request had been denied, Thomas would have made her life a living hell. “Do you have anywhere to stay?” “I’m going back to Darkfall,” she told him. “There’s something else I want to tell you. I found my fated mate. It’s Henry, the Alpha of Darkfall.” Miller frowned, the news catching him by surprise. Eleanor had already rejected his feelings, but he had hoped there would be a time when she would see him as more. Now that she had found her fated mate, and Darkfall’s Alpha at that, he knew he did not have a chance. “Does he treat you well?” he asked her. After what Thomas had put her through, he hoped her mate would be loyal to her. “He does, and we are both happy to have found each other,” she responded. He nodded. “I’m glad to hear that.” “About Thomas,” she told him, getting to the reason she had asked to speak to him, “my next plan is to replace him as Blackstorm’s Alpha. I know he is going to fight me with everything he has, but now that I’m not longer attached to him, I can fight him without hiding. I wanted to tell you how the situation has evolved and confirm whether you will support me.” “Are you sure you want to do this?” Miller asked her, his voice tinged with concern. “Thomas is not going to make it easy, and you may face a lot of opposition.” “That’s what I’ve been preparing for so far,” she told him. “It was why I did not rush to declare my intention to divorce him. Because of the new law, I have a right to half of his land and property. I’m in a much better place to challenge him.” Miller frowned as he thought about it. As Blackstorm’s Beta, he had hoped the issue between his Alpha and Luna could be solved amicably. But he had also known that as long as Thomas kept Mia around, it was almost impossible for that to happen. He did not want the pack to be embroiled in infighting. Especially not now, when there was a mysterious threat lurking. But now that it had come to this, he had to choose a side. “I will understand if you choose to support Thomas,” Eleanor told him before he could give her a response. “I won’t take it personally or force you to change your mind. I know you are caught in the middle of this as the Beta of the pack and it’s not an easy decision for you.”
