Lillian nudged her mom gently.
Viola turned and noticed Helen—both looked a bit awkward.
After standing there for a moment, Helen, who had come over first, broke the ice. “The Richards family... yeah, we didn’t treat Claire very well back then. But it’s all in the past now. Honestly, it’s great that Mrs. Allen sees past her background.”
Viola let out a smile and echoed, “You’ve got to have a conscience. She saved my life once, didn’t ask for anything in return, and she was just a stranger. If I still held any prejudice against someone like her, that’d be downright heartless.”
“I’ll admit, I was hung up on family background. Even her divorce made me hesitate. But you know, when I really thought about it, she’s amazing in every other way. And it’s not like those things were her fault.”
“So if I say I accept her now, I mean it. I treat her like my own daughter.”
