Chapter 81

Scarlett never said anything, but she knew the reason. She never asked anything, because she already knew. Even when her mother told her not to hate her father,but she could not control herself. She started to hate him. Because she was too busy with her career then, she did not even have the time to hate someone. That hate became a sense of numbing. She no longer cared. And so the story that the man told her earlier no longer had any effect on her. She did not care at all. That person,he was already dead to her. Vanessa was shocked. She never really thought that her daughter knew about that. She had always been curious. Why was Scarlett so averse to tht mention of her father? At least she needed knew what happened between them and she never once thought about mentioning the incident to her daughter so she should not hate that man so much right? So why does she hate her father so much? Vanessa finally got the answer today. It was because she was there that day. She saw everything for herself that day. There was no way that she could forgive such a person. But.... "What did he talk to you about today? How did the both of you even met?" Vanessa asked. She was really curious about this. "Is that even important?" Scarlett snorted. But she still went on to answer her mother. "I think that he was actually waiting for me. Anyway, he said that he wanted to talk to me. He told me that you left your family for him, seriously mom.... couldn't you have been a better judge of human character? How can you fall for someone like that? You were even ready to leave you family for him but he still treated you so terribly!" Scarlett said. She was so angry for her mother. Vanessa "....." Even her family never scolded her despite all the foolish things that she did. Who knew that she was going to receive the scolding from her daughter? Anyway, she deserved it. She did do a lot of foolish things back then. As her daughter said, she should have been a better judge of character. She wasn't. In the end, she made a mistake that cost her pain for the greater part of her life. "Didn't he say anything else about that?" Vanessa asked. She was hoping that he would at least tell his daughter the reason why he did the things that he did then. Scarlett could see through what her mother was thinking at once. "What? Do you want to know why he did those things? Are you hoping that he had a noble reason for leaving the both of us? So what if he has a reason? Are you going to go back to him?" Vanessa asked. Sometimes, she really wanted to open her mother's head and see what she is thinking. How can she even want to listen to the explanation of that kind of man? Hasn't she been through enough to learn her lesson from that man? Vanessa rolled her eyes. "What do you really take me for Scarlett? No matter what rubbish reasons he had for what he did, the fact still remains that he did then. He was the one who chose to leave us in the first place. Everything would have been perfect if he did not leave. But he still chose to leave us! I just really want to know what he was going to say. After all, he owes me an explanation at the very least!" Vanessa said. Scarlett thought about what her mother said and she completely agreed with her. She was right. That man owes her mother an explanation at the very least. He should explain to her why he did the things that he did back then. Since he already told her, she felt that there was no harm if she told her mother the things that he said. "He said that he left because he wanted to give you a better life. He said that your family did not approve of the both of them being together because they are always looking down on him since he was just a fresh graduate trying to make something of himself!" Scarlett said emotionlessly. Anyway she did not care. Those things no longer had anything to do with her. Vanessa rolled her eyes. That Ethan really is a master at spinning stories. Her dad and brother never thought that way about him. Yes they did not like him but that was because they did not trust the kind of person that he was. And they turned out to be right in the end! Vanessa remembered that back then, her brother had met with Ethan behind her father's back and offered to help him with his business but he refused! He said that he did not want to use his wife's money! It turned out that it was all because of his pride! He did not want to lose his pride by having his wife's older brother help him! Anyway, the things that happened, he is the one who caused all of them. There was no reason for them to feel sorry towards someone like him! But Scarlett wasn't done talking just yet. "He said that he left without telling you anything and then be fell into the trap of some woman. Anyway,he was forced to stay by that woman's side for so many years, doing what she wants" Scarlett said. Vanessa cletched her fists by her side in a place that her daughter could not see. She immediately knew who the woman that he was talking about was, Brenda. She was definitely someone who could do something like that. Brenda was someone who would go to any lengths to get what she wants. Vanessa sighed. There is no need for her to think about these things anymore. Brenda already died and as for Ethan, there is no hope for the both of them any longer. In fact, she was already doing him a huge favour by not going after him for all the things that he has done to her! "Oh right....he said that just before he married you, that same woman, she had drugged him and something happened between them. Anyway, she kept his pregnancy and she was planning for so long before she finally got what she wanted" Scarlett said, telling the story as if it did not have anything to do with her. "That should be his other daughter Mira" Vanessa said, thinking aloud. "Other daughter? He has another daughter?" Scarlett asked. "Yes...she should be your step sister" Vanessa said taking peels at Scarlett. Scarlett rolled her eyes. "I don't have a father so how is it possible that I have a step sister? Don't you think that this is absurd?" She asked. Vanessa sighed. Trust her daughter to think like this. Anyway, she had to admit that she was satisfied with Scarlett's attitude. She could be annoying most of the time but when it came down to the things that were really important, she was always thinking of her first. She felt that it was her good luck that she had such a daughter that was always thinking of her. "Let's go. I'll drop you off at home" Scarlett said. ........ Ryder and his mother came to an high end restaurant. As Ryder went to park the car, Kate took the opportunity to text Mira the address of the place were they were going to meet. Mira who was still at home trying to process the things that she had found out got up when she saw the message. She still did not know what she was supposed to believe. She did not know if her father really had something to do with her mother's death or not. she was thinking, maybe he doesn't want to tell me because he doesn't want me to worry. Who knows if it's someone else who did it and because he doesn't want to alarm me he did not tell me. He is probably investigating to find out who did it. Even if he did not love her mother the both of them have been together for so long. He won't just murder her without a word right? Anyway, right now, Mira was just trying to make excuses for herself because she did not want to believe it at all. She got up when she received the text from Kate. When her father comes back, she is going to have a good talk with him and find out just what this is all about. For now, she has to focus on snatching Ryder back from that woman. She dressed herself up and left for the restaurant ... Ryder entered the restaurant and saw that his mother had already chosen a seat. He walked over to her and passed the menu to her. As she ticked off the dishes that she wanted to order, Ryder continued to watch her. No matter how much he thought about it, he felt that something was really wrong with his mother showikd up all of a sudden here. There has to be something going on. She said that she really missed him and that she was sorry that she did not come back to see him once but for the time that they had spent together today, she has never tried to ask him what his life was like. She did not try to find out how he lived wen she left or how he was even leaving now. It was as if this mother of his did not even care at all. If she did not care about him, why will she show up in front of him and try to patch up things with him? Does she have some kind of plan? He was a teenager when his mother left but his impression of his mother has always been that of a cunning woman. Right now, he felt that there was something else to what she was doing right now. When Ryder saw how much his mother had ordered, he could not resist the urge to ask, "Are you going to finish that all by yourself?" It was not that he cared about the money. He did not care about that little bit of money at all. He just found it strange. It isn't as if she is starving right. He saw the car that his mother drove to the company. It wasn't a cheap model.. She is probably living a really good life. Kate smiled and said, "A friend of mine will be joining us soon" Ryder smiled and he did not say anything further. He was still busy thinking. She misses her son that she has not seen in ten years and she still arranges for someone else to be here when she eats with him for the first time in five years? No, there is something definitely wrong with this picture. He has to talk with Matt. Maybe they can find out what is going on. Ryder ordered the dishes. As soon as there were served, someone else walked to thier table. It was a familiar face that Ryder knew well. "Mira, what are you doing here?" He asked her. Mira turned to face Ryder and she immediately after suprised, as if she had not seen him at first. She has already talked about it with Kate. She was going to pretend as if she did not know that Kate is Ryder's mother. If Ryder finds out that she knows that Kate is his mother, it's going to be counter productive. He would think that Mira approached his mother because she knew that he was going to be here and that she had ulterior motives. He would only try to stay away from her then. Neither of them wanted that to happen. And so, she pretended as if she did not know that Ryder was going to be here too.
