The sickly pallor Krystal once had vanished. She'd even gained a bit of weight, and her belly was beginning to show.
Melody's gaze drifted momentarily to her midsection.
Krystal caught the look, and her expression darkened. "I have to say, I was surprised to learn you're James' daughter."
Melody stayed calm. "That had nothing to do with you."
"I just wanted to offer my congratulations. You really are unbelievably lucky," Krystal replied coolly, stepping closer.
Her tone was flat, as if simply making polite conversation, but her eyes were anything but—cold, distant, sharp.
She couldn't make sense of it. How could someone like Melody, so quiet, unremarkable, and naive, always land on her feet, protected and loved?
Meanwhile, Krystal had fought tooth and nail for every bit of affection, only to watch it all fall apart. She stopped in front of Melody.
