All of a sudden, the world seemed to be frozen still—even the rustle of the sea breeze vanished, leaving an eerie, suffocating silence. The sun hung high in the cloudless blue sky, its dazzling sunlight pouring down to sting my eyes with a sharp, burning tingle. The female siren remained motionless as a statue, but the corners of her mouth slowly stretched wide to both sides until a cold, menacing smirk formed. Suddenly, her upper and lower lips snapped open violently, gaping like the maw of a starving shark preparing to devour its prey.
It was too late for me to shout a warning or lunge to stop it. The siren’s sharp, ear-splitting cry pierced the silence, slicing into the depths of my eardrums like tens of millions of jagged thorns at once, then searing straight into the nerves of my brain.
