The car ride to the Brungins Territory with Caleb and Daniel was highly awkward. I hadn’t realized how much I’d come to rely on Joseph as a buffer between them.
“Was staying to look after his bridal shop an excuse?” I asked Caleb about Joseph.
He looked over at me from the driver’s seat. I had tried to give Daniel the front seat, especially since we were in his car, but he had insisted on staying in the back.
“What makes you say that?” Caleb asked.
“Well,” I said, admiring the pretty farmland that separated the northern border from most of the kingdom, “I’m under the impression that he has plenty of employees who could run it for him in his absence. Plus, I’m sure he wouldn’t be excited about leaving his wife for an undetermined amount of time. And I’m assuming he’s trying to find more intel or keep an eye on Sophia while we’re gone.”
Caleb kept his eyes on the road as he smiled broadly. “True, true, and probably true.”
