The next morning, before Abigail could bring up moving out again, everyone at the breakfast table had already shut the idea down.
When Juniper learned Abigail was practically her future daughter-in-law, she refused to let her go.
"Abby, let James learn how to cook on his own. Stay home, and I'll take care of you."
Peter also refused to let her go. "Grace left and took Cliff with her. Hazel will be heading back to her own home in a few days, too. If you also leave, I'll be an empty-nester."
Abigail blinked. "Peter, that's not how the term works."
"Why not? If I say it is, then it is."
Later, James called Abigail and said, "I haven't even settled down myself. If you come over, you'll just be moving back and forth with me."
But Abigail still remembered what James had told her that night. In a soft, coaxing voice, she replied, "James, you said you'd come get me."
James swallowed hard.
"Of course I will, but only when I can provide for myself first. I'm not bringing you out here
